Preparing for Kindergarten
Parents/caregivers can do a lot to help prepare their child for Kindergarten before the big 'first day'. Below is a list
of skills that will be useful for children starting Kindergarten. We recognize that not all children will have these skills
as everyone develops at a different pace, so this is intended only as a guide so that starting school may be just a little
easier.
Encourage your child to attempt the things mentioned below, but don't worry if your child can't do all of them. Talk to
the Kindergarten teacher, and together you can support and assist your child's learning.
Language
• talks to other people about familiar objects and events
• answers and asks simple questions
• makes needs known
• follows simple instructions
• uses books for enjoyment or for looking at pictures
• identifies pictures in books, magazines, on television or video
• uses a variety of things (pens, pencils, textas, paintbrushes, sticks in the dirt, scribble & write.
• joins in singing familiar songs
Mathematics
• recognises that numbers can be used to count
• uses words such as many, a lot, more, less
• identifies things in a group that are different
• sees differences in shapes
• differentiates between opposites - up and down, under and over, in front and behind, day and night
Personal/Social Skills
• uses the toilet independently
• can say own name and address
• adapts to unfamiliar settings and new experiences
• can finish a task, and tidies up afterwards

Ten Tips for Parents of Children Starting Kindergarten
Starting school can be a busy time for all concerned. The summer may
be nearly over and a new school year is ahead for some, this is the first time. Here are our ten tips to help you prepare:
Provide information about your child's immunisation status
Your child will be coming into contact with lots of other children and infections can spread very easily.
Immunisation records need to be presented for Kindergarten enrolment.
Under the Public Health (Amendment) Act 1992, children who have not been immunised may be sent home during an outbreak
of a vaccine-preventable disease.
Learn the names of the important people at the school.
This will help you communicate with your child about what they do each day at school. It is also important that you have
a relationship with your child's teacher and principal to ensure you are up to date with your child's progress.
Give all information about your child to the school especially medical and special needs.
You know your child best. Your child's kindergarten teacher will have many students to get to know. Help the teacher understand
your child better and faster by sharing information and insights. This will also ensure that your child gets any essential
attention.
Provide emergency contact numbers
The school might need to contact you urgently. Provide alternative numbers and contacts in case the school is unable to
contact you.
Make the school aware of any special family circumstances. Any changes to your child's family situation can impact on their
emotional and academic well-being. Inform your child's teacher and principal about any changed circumstances so that the child
can be supported if necessary. Examples of special circumstances include the birth of a sibling, divorce or the death of a
loved one.
'Establish routines with your child and stick to them
Prepare your child for a more structured day. Make a daily routine that includes mealtime, talking time, and reading time.
Make sure your child is road/travel safe
Children should know to cross the road only at marked crossings. Please set a good example. Take particular care when you
drop off and collect your child from school.
i Become familiar with school activities - develop a relationship with the school
Parents/caregivers set an example. If you are positive and encouraging towards school, your child will be too. Both the
students and teachers will appreciate your involvement and assistance in activities ranging from sports and excursions to
music and drama presentations.
•Educate your child about 'stranger danger.
Teach your child not to talk to strangers. They should not accept gifts or lifts from someone that they do not know.
Label equipment and clothing
Replacing lost clothing and equipment is expensive and inconvenient. You should clearly mark every item with your child's
name.

Following is a brief overview of the materials the students will use this year. Mrs. Cooper will send home an invoice for
the cost of the text books and other stationery items that will be purchased on your behalf.
TEXT BOOKS: 2 handwriting books Signpost Moths Book
We will also use a variety of exercise books for text writing, science, and music. The students will use scrap books
for keeping English and Moths activity sheets. The class is taught to be organised with their activity sheet work and to paste
them into the correct book for safe keeping and future reference.
FOCUS FOR KINDERGARTEN:
Please read the attached article titled "We learned it all in Kindergarten". Your help is required to ensure your child
is organised for school. Children need to have regular exercise, plenty of sleep and nutritious meals to be able to concentrate
and participate willingly and eagerly in all school activities.
I will talk to you over the next 3 weeks about your child and discuss what his or her greatest needs are at the moment
in order for them to achieve success.
Attached to this information sheet is a copy of the class time table. AT the bottom are the English and Art/craft units
of work that we will be exploring. Our themes for K-6 in HSIE (human society and its' environment) is Stage 1-Getting
Along, Stage 2 Working Together and Stage 3 Making Informed Choices. We are waiting on the small school
Programs from the department before we decide off our next topics. We will be holding a parent/teacher session to inform
you of the content of each subject for the year in a short time. It will be in the newsletter.

I can do it! I will try my hardest to do my own work and I will be proud of my achievements. Your help is required to ensure
your child achieves these goals. Your children must become independent learners who actively take up the challenge to learn
new things. I will talk with you about you individual Childs needs and how we can work together to allow the students to achieve
these goals for themselves.
HOMEWORK: The students should be reading to you every night the book or sounds they have been sent home from school. If
they do not bring anything home from school to practice please select a book from home to read. Every night the children should
read to you and you should read to them a book. In this reading time .you should discuss with your child ideas the books may
introduce or meaning of unfamiliar words. It should be a relaxed and enjoyable time. Pictures are an important part of reading
and should also be discussed. This session should take about 10 minutes as the children will become tired after their busy
day. Later in the term some students will take home spelling word to be written in sentences.

keeping English and Maths activity sheets. The class is taught to be organised with their activity sheet work and to paste
them into the correct book for safe keeping and future reference.
FOCUS FOR YEAR THREE
To improve the quality of text writing, by increase vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
To consolidate and expand mathematical knowledge.
To improve the student’s general knowledge of the world they live in and stimulate their eagerness to learn

HOMEWORK: The students will be given spelling homework on a Tuesday. They have 1 week to have all the activities completed
and return to school. They will be working with Year 4, 5, 6’s. It is very important that homework is completed on time
and returned to school on the due day. Failure to do so will affect the running of the scheme. Your child must be organised
for this. Children should be reading regularly at home. They should have already established a routine where they read every
night. To further help your child it is a good idea to practice times tables once a week- beat the clock etc. Maths is everywhere
and it is easy to get your child to practice real life Maths at home. At this stage of development the students should be
able to solve mental arithmetic sums in their heads in a short time. As our focus is text writing, the students will be asked
to regularly write in a particular style at home. Your help is required to stimulate this writing by encouraging them to expand
there word knowledge. This will improve their spelling skills. Use a dictionary or thesaurus to aid you.

Burrawang Public School Use Of Students Name Privacy policy:
Dear parents / Caregiver
During the course of your child / ren's time at Burrawang Public School, they will receive recognition
for the many events in which they participate. These may be mentioned in the school newsletter for citizenship & assembly
awards, the annual report for academic, cultural or sporting achievements or the local press for other events. At times your
child / ren's photograph may also be used.
Due to NSW Government Privacy Regulations, we must have a parent's signature on file for this
to be allowed to occur. Should a custody issue be involved, both parent's signatures are required. If a particular child's
or children's names are NOT to be used, please state them below. At any time your original decision may be overturned- but
it must be in writing.
